Research Reports

Substantial investments have been made by the European Union in the development of the Tourism Industry in the Wild Coast. Various reports have been prepared by various bodies, some of which are summarized here. More details can be obtained from the Eastern Cape Tourism Board (ECTB) or EU Progamme Management Unit at the address provided below.

European Union Programme of Support to the Wild Coast SDI: Anchor Area Framework Plan (2000)

The overall objective of this document had been to present a Tourism Development Framework Plan for 5 anchor areas, which will provide a clear focus for the implementation of the project activities. More details are available from the ECTB.

Wild Coast Tourism Development Policy (2001)

This document provides an overview of the status of the tourism industry in the Wild Coast, addressing community, environmental, institutional and tourism issues. It sets out a policy for development, and provides guidelines for project initiation. More details are available from the ECTB.

Eastern Cape Tourism Master Plan (2002)

This document provides the tourism industry and community in the Eastern Cape with a longer-term framework for conducting their activities in the five-year period from 2002 - 2006. It is aimed at enabling individual businesses to anticipate, plan and prepare for potential changes, opportunities and threats. It also provides the industry and community with a firm basis for planning financial and resource requirements by isolating and developing key issues associated with the industry's development. It puts in place programmes for improving the Eastern Cape's tourism industry, its profitability and performance. Finally, it stresses the impact of tourism and its growing importance on employment in the Eastern Cape economy today and in the future. More details are available from the ECTB.

Strategic Marketing Action Plan (2003)

The objectives of this study had been to develop a product-and-demand oriented strategy for the promotion of the Wild Coast as a tourist destination, in context with the existing or developing marketing strategies on national, provincial and regional levels. In addition, it aimed at designing a concept for the implementation through a series of balanced and market-oriented marketing and promotional tools, including a marketing action plan defining actions, timings and costs. Finally, it provided a timeframe and budget for implementing these. More details are available from the ECTB.

Tourism Planning Framework For The O R Tambo District Municipality (2003)

This Framework was prepared by the EU Wild Coast Programme at the request of the OR Tambo District Municipality, and focussed on the whole District and not just the Wild Coast Area. The aims of this framework had been to stimulate discussion on integrated tourism planning in the OR Tambo District, and to provide a framework to assist tourism planning at the local municipality level, and to encourage linkages between the local municipalities. In addition, it aimed at developing linkages to other tourism planning documents that have been produced, particularly the Eastern Cape Tourism Master Plan and the Wild Coast Tourism Development Policy. Finally, it promoted integration of tourism policy implementation between the different spheres of government. More details are available from the ECTB.
