GETTING THERE ...

There are a number of ways to get here: Your main entry points would be Mzamba (just south of Port Edward), Kokstad, Umtata, or East London (Buffalo City).

Driving

Should you be driving, you could do so from the North, traveling in a southerly direction from Durban on the N2 up to Port Shepstone, and then follow route R51 up to Port Edward. The Wild Coast then starts across the Mtamvuna River. Alternatively, traveling from Gauteng, you might consider taking the N3 up to Pietermaritzburg, and then taking route R56 through Richmond, Ixopo, uMzimkulu, and join the N2 just beyond Kokstad.

Should you want to start from the South, you would take the N2 out of East London (Bufalo City), and travel in a northerly direction through Butterworth up to Umtata. As an alternative, should you be traveling from Port Elizabeth, you might want to travel in an easterly direction on the N2 until you reach King William’s Town. Then take the R63 route up to Kei Road, and turn right. After a short distance on the N6, turn off to the left to rejoin the R63, and travel in an easterly direction through Komga to join the N2 just bfore it crosses the Kei River.

The last option, when traveling by road from Gauteng or the Freestate, would be take the N6 South up to Aliwal North. You could either head further south on the N6, and after 84 km, take route R56 through Dordrecht, Indwe, Elliot, Ugie and Maclear. Then turn right and travel through Tsolo, after which you join the N2 route. Alternatively you might want the take the very spectacular R58 from Aliwal North towards Elliot. Should you want to start in Umtata, you might consider taking the R51 route, which turns off the N6 18km to the south of Queenstown. Travel through Engcobo to Umtata.

Flying

Regular scheduled flights are offered to East London, Umtata and Margate, from where you might rent a car. Alternatively, you might want to charter a plane to one of the smaller landing strips in Idutywa, Kokstad, Lusikisiki, Bizana, Harding, or Margate (but do confirm travel arrangements in advance).

Other Options

Various commercial bus services are on offer traveling from either Durban or East London. Alternatively, you might consider taking a train to either East London, Umtata, Kokstad or Port Edward, and then either taking local taxi’s from there, or using the scheduled bus services.
